When a row "rules out" a position, it shows that digit there but its ▲ marks are already used up (or it has none), so the digit can't sit there.
- Row 4 (8 0 2 9) has no marks at all, so 8, 0, 2, and 9 are not in the code.
- Row 1 (5 4 2 9) has 2 marks still unexplained, and only 2 digits are left undecided: 5 and 4. So both are in the code.
- Row 3 (4 9 6 8) has one mark, already accounted for by 4. That rules out 6.
- Row 2 (6 3 1 9) has 2 marks still unexplained, and only 2 digits are left undecided: 3 and 1. So both are in the code.
- That makes all four digits of the code: 1, 3, 4, and 5. Every other digit is out, which also rules out 7.
- Row 5 (3 9 6 8) has one digit in the right spot, and the 3 in position 1 is its only digit in the code, so it's locked in.
- Row 1 (5 4 2 9) has one digit in the right spot. Since position 1 is already 3, it has to be the 4 in position 2.
- The 1 has only one spot left: position 4 (row 2 rules out position 3, position 1 is already 3, and position 2 is already 4).
- That leaves the 5 for position 3.
That cracks it: the code is 3451.
