How to play Kode

Kode is a daily logic puzzle: a hidden four-digit code with no repeated digits, and a board of clues that have already been graded for you. Read the marks, cross-reference the rows, and crack the combination in three tries. If you enjoy Wordle or Mastermind, you will feel right at home.

What the marks mean

Each clue row is scored by two badges. They tell you how many digits are right — not which ones — so you compare rows to pin down every digit.

  • right digit · right spot
  • right digit · wrong spot

The rules, step by step

  1. 1

    Read the clues

Every clue is a guess that has already been graded. You never guess blind.

  2. 2

    Decode the marks

The badges grade the whole row. They tell you how many, not which. Cross-reference rows to pin each digit.

  3. 3

    Solve the combination

Four digits, no repeats, and you get three tries. Type your answer on the keypad — fewer tries and less time, that's your score.

  4. 4

    Mark as you go

Optional: tap any clue tile to pencil-mark it — tap to cycle red, yellow, green; long-press to clear. Just a notepad for your deductions; it never affects the grading.

Frequently asked questions

How many guesses do I get?
Three. Every guess must be a four-digit code with no repeated digits. Solve it in as few tries — and as little time — as you can; that is your score.
What do the coloured marks mean?
A jade mark means a digit is correct and in the right spot. An amber mark means the digit is in the code but in the wrong spot. The badges count how many, not which, so you cross-reference rows to deduce each digit.
Is there a new puzzle every day?
Yes. A fresh Kode is released every day at midnight UTC, and it is the same puzzle for every player. Your streak grows for each day you solve it.
Do I need an account to play?
No. Kode is free and runs in your browser. Your streak and stats are saved on your device, so you can start playing straight away.
